RETRO FIT DIMMABLE LED WITH WIRELESS LIGHTING CONTROLS FROM 3E

3E were asked to develop a retro fit gear tray to upgrade the lighting in a School Hall. The Hall forms a vital part of the School and is used for a variety of purposes ranging from assemblies to theatre productions as well as an examination hall. The school wanted the fittings to be dimmable for their theatre productions and presentations, while one side is fully glazed which they were keen to utilise to reduce their energy consumption further with the use of photocells.

The existing luminaires featured 3 x 90 Watt T12 lamps that were becoming increasingly difficult to source, with several broken diffusers which had not been replaced. Not only were the luminaires ageing but the installation was further complicated by an asbestos ceiling which severely restricted the type of maintenance work that could be carried out on the fittings. Traditional dimming solutions require that the groups of luminaires are wired together however; the nature of the ceiling ruled this out.

3E designed and manufactured a gear tray which featured 6 x 2200 lumen Philips LEDLine LED boards complete with dimmable Xitanium drivers and the new wireless control system. The luminaires were divided into two groups as the school required, and every fitting was supplied with an integral PIR/photocell detector that controls the luminaires in addition to the hand held controller.

The energy consumption per fitting was reduced from 270 Watts per luminaire to 97.2 Watt (when at 100% output), a reduction of 64% before any additional savings from the occupancy detectors or the photocells are included. Not only have the running costs been reduced, the lighting levels been increased but the maintenance costs have been eliminated, with a projected life of the installation of 25 years based on the current operating hours.
