Pharmaceutical Lighting Case Study

Pharmaceutical Lighting Case Study

About this project

One of the World’s leading Pharmaceutical Companies approached 3E to reduce their lighting costs across the facility. One of their offices consisted of 130 4 x 14-watt T5 luminaires and 38 x 18-watt PL-L circular downlights. While the current system was relatively new, was costly and wasn’t making use of the abundant natural light which was available within the building.

A key driver behind the high cost was the lack of LED technology resulting in high energy consumption and maintenance costs - added to this the control system for the lighting was regularly malfunctioning leading to high repair costs and operational inefficiencies.

Key Issues:

  • Upgrade from fluorescent to LED technology to save energy and maintenance costs
  • Poor use of the natural light available in the building
  • A malfunctioning control system

The 3E Solution

We were asked to specify a system that solved the key issues the Bio-Pharmaceutical company were facing, the main requirements being a system that would be cost effective, energy efficient and low maintenance whilst making better use of the available natural light.

Using our vast industry experience, we designed a solution that met these needs using 130 Prisma IV luminaries - these LED lights included micro prismatic diffusers, DALI drivers and PIR photocell sensors on each luminaire. In addition, the original downlights were replaced with 15-watt LED units.

Using this technology, we were able to enhance the quality of the lighting, improve the energy efficiency and provide a longer life span to reduce maintenance costs.

Our approach included:

  • A complete survey of the existing lighting to identity the areas for improvement
  • The design of a new lighting system to meet the goals of the end user
  • The introduction of the latest LED technology
  • The inclusion of PIR photocell sensors to automate lighting control
  • A focus on a system that needed minimal maintenance

The Outcome

The newly installed lighting system not only optimised the use of the natural light but also met the clients’ goals for energy saving and maintenance costs The inclusion of photocell sensors ensured that the units were programmed to dim or turn off automatically when no motion was detected. This resulted in a significant decrease in energy consumption.

The overall solution reduced the energy use of lighting within the building by 66% with an additional 30% commissioning saving resulting in an overall energy saving of an impressive 75%.

Key Benefits:

  • Improve energy efficiency by using the latest technology
  • Better light quality and distribution providing a more comfortable work environment
  • Extended life span of the products and a decrease in maintenance costs
  • Automated control using the PIR photocell sensors

In Summary

The specified solution has allowed our client to meet all their project goals.
